My love for Cold War Kids started in 2010. That's when I first came across their first album, Robbers & Cowards. One of my best friends introduced the band and album to me and I know most people go on about how they find a love for bands because they changed their life and all this whimsical crap. The truth is, I loved them because at that time, only him and I knew who they were, in our circle, and the indie fiend I am absolutely loved just how little people knew about them. They were a little slice of musical heaven I could whip out in company and say things like, "Oh, you don't know Cold War Kids? Yeah you've just got to be in the know, you know." I was an insufferable music snob back then. More so now but I at least pretend a bit better now.

"OLIVER!" (WITH AN EXCLAMATION POINT!)

Whenever I think about the musical Oliver!, I'm struck by how over the years its exclamation point feels so earned due to its worldwide success. After wowing audiences in 1960 with its first production in Wimbledon, England, it reopened two years later in a larger, more fully developed production in the West End where it became the longest running British musical with a record-breaking 2,618 performances. American producer David Merrick, then ubiquitous for bringing shows across the pond to Broadway, quickly nabbed the rights and gave it a near year-long U.S. tour before finally arriving on Broadway January 6, 1963, fifty-nine years ago tonight. A solid hit, it ran for close to two years, then became even more famous by its Academy Award winning film adaptation in 1968 (Best Picture and five other Oscars, including a rare special award to choreographer Onna White for her brilliant dances). Forever beloved in its native England, the stage show has probably been revived there more times than any other homegrown musical.
